We are delighted to support the return of Frieze Los Angeles to the West Coast of the U.S. as we mark the 20th anniversary of Deutsche Bank’s partnership with Frieze worldwide.
Taking place on February 16-19, the fifth edition of the fair marks an important milestone in our partnership with Frieze worldwide – a relationship defined by growth and collaboration.
This shared commitment to contemporary art and culture continues with the return of the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award and our support for emerging filmmaking talent based in the city.
The 2023 Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award
First launched in 2019, the film award is a partnership between Deutsche Bank, Frieze, FIFTH SEASON and Ghetto Film School, providing a development programme and platform for Los Angeles-based filmmakers aged 18-34.
“The year 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of our relationship with Frieze as Global Lead Partner,” says film award juror Claudio de Sanctis, Head of the International Private Bank and CEO EMEA for Deutsche Bank. “On this special occasion, it remains an honour to work with FIFTH SEASON and Ghetto Film School for the fourth year to support emerging artists in Los Angeles, as they expand their careers in a medium that is very close to my heart. This year’s theme, ‘exploring identity’, is a timely and fascinating brief and I can’t wait to see how this group of talented filmmakers tackle the subject. A huge congratulations to the nine finalists and good luck to them all.”

Santa Monica Airport: a new home for Frieze Los Angeles
This year’s fair also raises the curtain on an exciting new venue for Frieze Los Angeles. The venue spans two sites at Santa Monica Airport: a bespoke Frieze tent designed by Kulapat Yantrasast’s WHY studio, and the nearby Barker Hanger.
Thanks to its expanded venue, and led by Christine Messineo, Frieze’s Director of Americas, Frieze Los Angeles 2023 will feature more than 120 galleries from 22 countries across the world. These will include major world-leading galleries, alongside some of the US’s most exciting emerging spaces. Visitors will also see ambitious installations, special collaborations with non-profit organisations, and be able to enjoy pop-ups from some of Los Angeles’s most loved restaurants.
An expanded fair with a focus on 20th century art
Frieze Los Angeles 2023’s larger venue will also allow for a wider selection of exhibits focussed specifically on the 20th century, with an emphasis on showing work by overlooked figures. These works will be shown in the Barker Hanger, adjacent to the main Frieze tent, alongside the Focus section showing US emerging art.
“We are delighted that Frieze Los Angeles has an expanded footprint this year. With influential work from the 20th century now also showing, we will see works that have not yet been acknowledged broadly, alongside cutting-edge art from across the US,” says Anna Herrhausen, Global Head of Deutsche Bank Art & Culture. “With this additional focus, the fair provides an exciting platform for dialogue between artists from different decades.”
The Deutsche Bank Wealth Management Lounge: hosting our awards ceremony
This year’s venue for Frieze Los Angeles may have changed, but one constant is the presence of our Deutsche Bank Wealth Management Lounge. Located next to the entrance of the Frieze tent, our lounge offers a place for all our guests to rest, reflect and connect. It will also play host to the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award ceremony, where the winners of the 2023 Jury Prize and Audience Award will be announced during the fair.
“Twenty years of partnership is an important anniversary by any measure – but it’s far from our only important metric,” says Nicky West-Poole, Global Head of Central Marketing at Deutsche Bank’s International Private Bank. “We seek to minimise the impact of our events on the environment wherever possible, while always maintaining the highest quality of experience for our clients and guests.”
Frieze Viewing Room and Art:LIVE: a virtual window on contemporary art
As ever, we believe art should be accessible to everyone, and following its enormous success in previous years, the Los Angeles edition of Frieze Viewing Room will also be live online. Available to all, it will showcase works by leading contemporary galleries, and will take place alongside a Frieze Week programme of online and live exhibitions and events across the city.
Art:LIVE is our broadcast of exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes highlights from the fair. Developed in collaboration with Frieze Studios, Art:LIVE at Frieze Los Angeles is a way to experience the cutting-edge art and culture of the fair, including an exclusive virtual tour of the fair and conversations with artists, wherever you are. It will be broadcast on Sunday, February 19, and available on-demand on deutschewealth.com.
