Cities both exacerbate climate change and suffer from its consequences – e.g. through flooding, or excess heat, or changing patterns of disease. Getting them to work better must be a key environmental and social priority.
In our latest CIO Special – Cities under threat: real estate investment and climate change we argue that:
- Building and construction accounts for a large share of global energy use and emissions.
- Cities will have to adapt to protect themselves and mitigate their climate change effects.
- New financing models will feature public/private partnerships, targeting and philanthropy.
